Vashon Bluff Garden Path

Design problem

To create a welcoming pathway across a narrow opening at the front of the house while screening the utility area and providing low maintenance surfaces and plants to soften the space. Integrate the house into the natural woodland setting and accentuate the water view and shoreline below.

Design Solutions

  1. Add a curved path to mimic the water and shoreline and to trick the eye making the narrow space feel wider.

  2. Use strong shapes (circles) in different sizes to anchor the ends of the path, create a focal in the center and to provide ‘resting spots’ to enjoy the view.

  3. Use irrigated containers to lift plants and allow surfaces to be easily maintained.

  4. Change surface materials to emphasize strong shapes.

  5. Use short plant materials to emphasize the edge of the path, but not block the view.
