Seattle Landscape Design Fire Pit Area for Entertaining

Urban Living Paradise

Design problem

Create privacy for homeowner from a 3 story unit that went up with windows facing into her back yard and into the private living areas of her home. Create spaces for a fire pit and entertaining, a dining area and a sitting area.

Design Solution

  1. Screen from the perimeter of the property to the south with a fast growing, prunable hedge.

  2. Design a 9’ tall arbor to frame the lower living area, to support an evergreen vine in the middle of the lower garden, which screens the fire pit seating area.

  3. Create a personalized focal point to draw the eye down into the garden planting area.

  4. Create lush plantings and use palm trees strategically to screen above the garage where there are no planting beds.

  5. Expand deck as far as possible, move steps to lower garden to the east, install perforated powder coated architectural screens to obscure the view and to create privacy on the deck and interior house rooms.  Lift screens off deck surface 30” to provide a view to the garden and create a feeling of openness, while maintaining a sense of privacy.  Use planters with trees on the deck to break the rectilinear feel and draw the eye up.

  6. Build a tall fence to the east with an open cable top to keep the view of green bamboo in the neighbors’ yard.
